The Health Museum CHISPA Family Science Event April 1, 2015

The Health Museum CHISPA Family Science Event

On March 25, 2015 CHISPA partners in Houston Texas, The Health Museum and Diversity Roots and Wings (D.R.A.W.) Academy celebrated their Family Science event. The CHISPA project provides amazing opportunities for multi-generational and inter-generational out-of-school time learning experiences for children and their families.

Dr. Melanie Johnson, President and CEO of The Health Museum welcomed the families to the event and Mr. Gonzalo Perez, DeBakey Cell Lab Educator provided an overview of the evening. Mr. Jose L. Rodriguez, representing the National Council of La Raza (NCLR), provided the families and the Museum staff with a brief overview of the CHISPA program. NCLR works with D.R.A.W. Academy to build stronger communities and increase the engagement of Hispanic children and their families with science and local science resources.

The families had an opportunity to explore the entire Museum, including various exhibits and the 3D movie Planet You!. In a special preview of the DeBakey Cell Lab, families were able to enjoy seven new authentic biology-based science experiments. The DeBakey Cell Lab is a 2,000 square foot exhibit featuring seven authentic biology-based science experiments that have been developed for visitors from ages 7 to adult. From cheek cell analysis, ideal from young visitors, to DNA extraction for budding scientists, there was a fascinating experience awaiting all. The DeBakey Cell Lab is the only bilingual science lab museum exhibit in the country which made it ideal for the CHISPA families from D.R.A.W. Academy.

In the lab, children donned a lab coat, gloves and goggles where they performed cheek cell analysis and extracted DNA from wheat germ. The DeBakey Cell Lab is the only bilingual science lab museum exhibit in the country, which made it an ideal experience for the CHISPA families from D.R.A.W. Academy.

Several parents had never been to a museum, so this was a great opportunity for them to learn about science with their children. Many parents stated that they would make it a point to visit the Museum now that they know that the information is available to them in Spanish.
